at minneapolis st. paul airport. nbc meteorologist bill karins has been tracking those storms. it looks bad. >> impressive. ten inches in minneapolis. winter has arrived and in a big way through the middle of the country. the wind chills are brutal this morning. all of this mess is now sliding to the east coast. thankfully not the snow and ice. the storm itself is actually located over lower michigan heading up towards just north of buffalo. these storms in the winter that track up into canada drag warmer air to the east coast. that's why we're not worried about a big snow or ice storm on the eastern seaboard. it's going to be warm enough for severe thunderstorms, maybe damaging hail and wind. watching areas of alabama and northern georgia. twa warm air up the east coast. all the cold air has been stored up towards alaska, fairbanks, all the way up towards central canada. the door has now been opened. the cold blast has made it down to texas. there's snow flurries not far away from areas like dallas this morning. as far as new england this goes, if you're traveling in the state of maine rig

to the heaviest snow in months. highway closures and around 150 flight cancelations and delays at minneapolis, st. paul's airport, this morning. bill karins tracking the weather. what does it look like now? >> old man winter crashed the party this weekend. without a doubt. we were off to a warm period of weather throughout the country. now all the cold air up in canada and alaska has rushed to the south behind the storm. most of the snow was over with. light stuff and flurries minneapolis, green bay, light snow left for you. but the big story is the cold air that's behind this. if you're shoveling or snowplowing, it's miserable. the storm is heading east. instead of going due east or redeveloping off the coast, it's heading to quebec. it's dragging warm air up the eastern seaboard. it's only extreme northern portions of vermont, new hampshire, and all of the state of maine that we have to deal with ice and snow during the morning. i think maine especially around augusta, i-95, you'll have to deal with the possibility of a lot of sleet, too, mixed in. rain further to the south. we had strong thund

in minnesota are dealing with a lot of snow this morning including minneapolis, where they had over 10 inches of snow. let's bring in alexandra steel. >> you talked about minneapolis and the star tribune there says winter back. welcome, winter back. it's been a poultry few years there and this is their livelihood. so, a big snowfall, the biggest in two years in places like minneapolis. entire season last year, only 22 inches. their biggest last season, only 4 inches of snow. 14 inches. this is 14 miles east of minneapolis. maplewood. so, twin cities picking up about 10.5 inches of snow, so certainly good news for them, but in the big picture, this is incredibly dynamic. here's the radar. there's minneapolis. all the rain from the snow that pushed eastward. it's now just rain. the arctic air was in place in minneapolis. right now, it feels like 3 and it's 13 degrees. arctic air still there. not here in the northeast. new york, 40 degrees, no snow with that. but the only snow we'll see here is in northern maine. about 8 to 10 inches. through the hudson valley, very warm temperatures. new york,

minneapolis 27 degrees. 78 degrees in dallas-fort worth and almost the entire lower 48 have been way above average. even for dallas, it was 25 degrees above average. the one-shot of really cold air will become norway's we get into late thursday and friday. a little circulation over us today that brought the showers. here is the big area of storm is, getting developed in the southwest. that will lead to quite a storm coming out of the southwest. that is the reason right now there are already winter storm warnings from chicago and a blizzard warning around denver. over the next 24 hours that storm will be moving well to our north. but we will be on the mild side. tomorrow, even as it comes of the southwest a high-pressure rolls over to a lot of sunshine. later in the week here comes the moisture in the form of rain showers even around us in spots like pittsburg. then the cold air really comes in as we get into friday. that is the day that it will finally begin to feel little bit like december, but not tomorrow. tomorrow morning temperatures near 40 degrees, above-average. almost 10 degrees a

minneapolis. the arctic cold air is not going to make its way into our area any time soon. we will keep the temperatures slightly below average this time of year, but still comfortable for the end of december early- january. the satellite radar we had a brief bit of wet snow, not accumulating moving up the east coast. new york city and the clear, boston getting heavier snow, upper new england. all of this is moving out of the early morning. the high pressure settles into our area and the wind picks up out of the northwest 25-30 m.p.h. early in the morning. no watch or advisories with the exception of extreme western maryland, still with a winter storm warning for garrett county until 7:00 in the morning. the future-cast tomorrow, a mixture of sun and clouds, more sunshine than clouds, but the strong northwest wind will make it feel like the 20's as we move into early tomorrow evening. tomorrow night, it will be cold, not quite as windy as right now. travel plans, are going to the game at fedex field, bundled up. cold and windy 25-32 tonight. tomorrow, the same wind at about 20-30 the te

. and the cold air, it's still chilly in minneapolis, but that's where you you should be this time of year. where it won't see much of a cooldown is anywhere in the southern half of the country because the cold air is just kind of cut off. you notice a lot of clouds over the heartland. the green on the map shows you where the rain is. new england, you've had rain overnight. it's been very light and continues to move through, but driving up on 95, heading through new hampshire into maine, you'll get in some of that rain. boston just some showers for you. new york city, it look like maybe a sprinkle or two. there has been rain overnight in louisiana and mississippi, but that doesn't even look very impressive heading towards mobile. forecast wise, the only areas that will look like winter soon towards minneapolis, you're one of the only spots could i find that has a chance for some snow. so today's forecast, again, still very warm out there. even above average after the cold front. denver at 68. for the eastern seaboard, this upcoming weekend, a little more unsettled, but not chilly. >> all right, b
